Sheltered Workshop A joint venture of Government Rehabilitation Institute for Intellectual Disabilities(GRIID) & Umeed Society, Chandigarh

Introduction:

A sheltered workshop (SW) provides persons with disabilities a training environment specially designed to accommodate the limitations arising from their disabilities, in which they can be trained to engage in allowance-generating work process, learn to adjust to normal work requirements, develop social skills and relationships and prepare for potential advancement to supported/ open employment where possible. It is a welfare-oriented service without an employer/employee relationship between the workshop operators and the trainees.

 Objectives:

  • The objective of Sheltered Workshop is to provide vocational rehabilitation service through:
  • On the job training to persons with disabilities to develop and maintain social and economic potential.
  • To provide job opportunity in a supervised environment.
  • To provide opportunities for work adjustment and advancement with the ultimate objective of enabling persons with disabilities to move on to supported and open employment where possible.
  • To provide safe secure, friendly and structured environment.

Target group

  • The target group for Sheltered Workshop is Persons with Intellectual Disabilities aged above 18years or above.
  • Not all persons engaged in Sheltered Workshop would be from GRIID. Those who have ability to work, and are not availing any rehabilitation services will be engaged.
  • An effort will be made to engage half the persons from GRIID and half from community.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for a Sheltered Workshop place, an applicant should be:

  • Having intellectual disability with required adaptive skills related to trades of sheltered workshop.
  • Independent in self-help skill and personal care skills.(Observation for 1 month is mandatory for the same)
  • Mentally and emotionally stable with no active infectious disease and any behaviour issues.
  • Having work motivation/ ability through an assessment prior to admission.
  • For those from GRIID trained in vocational skills by GRIID and referred by Principal, GRIID.

Selection Criteria:-

  • All the referred PWD’s will be under observation for one month and they will be enrolled on the basis of their vocational and self help skills by a committee of Umeed Society. (Working President, General Secretary and Manager).

Following trades are functional under Sheltered workshop:-

  • Sanitary Napkins making Unit
  • Masala packaging Unit
  • Cutting & Tailoring Unit (Stitching linen for Hospital )
  • Packaging Unit of products prepared by Rural areas of Himachal Pradesh, Utrakhand & Kashmir.
  • Sublimation Printing Unit.
